Project

Edtech Minigames

In collaboration with Ogilvy, North Kingdom produced Period Planet. Kotex's newest game-based learning platform where their educational curriculum is translated into mini-games, embraced and integrated into the classroom. Our game is comprised of four environments on the planet, each hosting a unique game mechanic and topic. The experience covers: Puberty and Signs of Getting a Period, How the Uterus Functions, Phases of the Menstrual Cycle, and Period Products & Period Preparedness. Playing Period Planet is a voyage across a new world to fight stigma, collect knowledge, and bright life back to a planet turned lifeless due to ignorance.

My Role

Responsible for shaping and defining the user experience of the project from a usability and creative point of view. I held the user experience ownership of all client deliverables and is responsible to package deliverables and presentations. Facilitated creative conversations, lead creative regarding art direction, game and narrative design, support the team to take necessary decisions to propel the project forward. Hard deliverables include: user journeys, game narrative, define game mechanics, wireframes, game design doc, production bible.
Disciplines included: UX, UI Design, 3D Design, Development, Motion Design, Sound Design.

Approach

Period Planet was once a lush and fertile planet but lack of knowledge has transformed it into a dark moonscape. Your mission is to bring Period Planet across the four levels and unique planet environments to bring the world back to life with every question you answer and every myth you bust. The beta has been tested with teachers and students in Australia with 92% saying they will use it in their teaching curriculum.

Challenges & Solutions

This was designed for a classroom setting in which students need to complete the entire curriculum game experience in 45 minutes. This heavily impacted game complexity in level design and curriculum length to effectively allow this age group to complete the gameplay successfully. We wanted the curriculum to be accessible to children outside of the classroom so we created Period Planet in WebGL for low barrier of entry to children for a wide bandwidth of devices and internet connection.
